There are many places online that you can go to find saltwater fishing reels for sale, the thing that you have to realize is that you will get what you pay for, especially when it comes to saltwater fishing reels for sale. If you are serious about saltwater fishing then you know that you cannot go cheap and low quality when it comes to the reel as there is a good chance you will loose the big one when you need a high quality fishing reel the most.
Here I will be going over some types of saltwater fishing reels that there are, and this will be basically aimed toward the beginner fisherman. If you are just starting out, or want to get your kid into saltwater fishing, the best saltwater fishing reel would be a spin casting reel.
These are generally the cheapest kind of saltwater fishing reels that there are, but also the best to learn on. If they break you will not take a huge loss when it comes to money coming out of your pocket, learn to use this kind if you have never been fishing before. Spin casting reels are close faced, meaning that you will not be able to see the fishing line that is around the spool. Remember you will need to use this type of saltwater fishing reel with a spin casting fishing rod, they will not work with other types that are out there.
The way that you release the fishing line on this type of fishing reel is by a button, and when you want the spool to lock back up you just let go of the button. Spin casting reels are designed for very light line, I would not recommend putting anything heavier than 8 pound test line on these, as they are very small and larger fishing line will only cause complications that will drive you crazy. Some of the disadvantages to having a spin casting reel are, you cannot catch big fish on them due to the line weight limitations.
Even though they hold light line really well, you are limited to how much line you can put on the reel, putting too much line on them will cause them to jam up easily. The line on spin casting reels can easily get jammed up if you do not keep the line tight, and you will have to take the cover off to fix the problem. Not all spin casting fishing reels are crap, the more expensive kind will last you a long time.
The next type of saltwater fishing reel I want to cover is the spinning reel. Spinning reels have an open face on them, and the line that you let out is controlled by what is called a bail, which is U shaped and also helps guide the fishing line onto the reel. There are many good reasons to go with a spinning saltwater fishing reel, some of them are as follows. With a spinning reel, they come in many sizes, so there are lots of spinning reels that are out there that will allow you to put hundreds of yards of semi-heavy fishing line on them, so you can catch big fish on a spinning reel. The drag systems are generally a lot better than those on a spin casting reel, some are exceptionally good, and some are just decent. The cost of a spinning saltwater fishing reel can range from about 10 bucks to thousands, there is a huge gap of quality in them. They are also the most common type of saltwater fishing reels that are used in saltwater fishing.
Another type of saltwater fishing reel is the bait-casting reel. These are the most difficult of the saltwater fishing reels to use and require the most practice. As the same as the spinning reels, bait-casting reels can be extremely cheap or they can be extremely expensive, they also have models that can handle very heavy types of saltwater fishing line. They give you more control when it comes to casting, hence the name, and they also have some of the smoothest drag systems there are when it comes to saltwater fishing reels, they also offer you a great amount of control when you are casting with them.
Fly fishing reels, I will go over these very briefly as this is a whole other can of worms to open that will be explained in further detail in the future. Fly fishing reels are mainly used for holding onto the line, since you do not need to use the reel when you are casting. It is very important to know what kind of fish that you are going for when you are looking to purchase a saltwater fly fishing reel. In freshwater it is not as important, but in saltwater the fish get a lot bigger than they do in freshwater.
Importance Of Drag
When you are choosing a saltwater fishing reel the drag is very important on judging the quality of the reel. What this means is that when a fish gets on the line, it will run and when the fish is running at full speed line will be coming off of the spool. The drag on a fishing reel can be set to tight, to loose, if it is set too loose the fish will probably run all of the fishing line off of your spool. If the drag is too tight, then you will be increasing the chances of the line snapping. Some drag systems are smooth and some are rough, before purchasing a reel, you can test it for yourself if their is allready some fishing line on the reel, which in a lot of cases there will be.
Electric fishing reels are the most expensive types of saltwater fishing reels that there are. If you are not fishing in at least 200 feet of water there is no need to be using this type of saltwater fishing reel. These are for the die hard bottom fisherman, who could be letting out hundreds of yards of line out, and would simply take hours to reel in if it wasnt electric. Many bottom fisherman use these types of reels when fishing for grouper in extremely deep water.
